Who We Are and Why Investment Theory Matters
Back in 2017, we started Noxelin Orv because the gap between academic finance and practical understanding felt too wide. Real people deserved better access to genuine investment knowledge without the mystification.
How We Got Here
Our journey hasn't followed a straight line. We've learned more from mistakes and student questions than from any textbook. Here's what shaped us.
The Beginning
Started with evening workshops in Rathdowney. Ten people showed up. Seven stayed. Those three who left taught us our first lesson about clarity versus complexity.
Refining the Approach
Realized that throwing formulas at people doesn't help anyone. We rebuilt everything around real scenarios and actual decision-making processes.
Expanding Reach
More learners meant more diverse backgrounds and questions. Each cohort challenged us to explain concepts in ways we hadn't considered before.
Where We Stand
Now working with professionals across Ireland who want investment literacy without the sales pitch. The work continues to evolve based on what actually helps people understand markets.
Our Teaching Philosophy
Investment theory isn't about prediction. It's about understanding the frameworks that help you think through uncertainty. We don't promise returns because that would be dishonest. Markets do what they do.
What we do promise is rigorous exploration of concepts like portfolio theory, risk assessment, and behavioral finance patterns. Not to make you wealthy overnight, but to help you make more informed decisions over time.
Every module we design gets tested with skeptical questions. If something doesn't hold up under scrutiny from our learners, we rework it. This isn't about ideology or market predictions. It's about giving you mental models that actually work when you're facing real financial choices.
The Person Behind the Programs
We're not a massive operation. The education programs here reflect the perspective of someone who's spent years wrestling with how to make investment theory accessible without dumbing it down.
Torvald Hjelm
Worked in financial analysis for eight years before realizing education mattered more than optimization. Now focused on helping people understand why investment decisions are harder than they look and what frameworks actually help.
Honest Limitations
We don't know what markets will do next year. Neither does anyone else. Our programs acknowledge uncertainty rather than pretending we have secret insights. You'll learn to work with incomplete information, not chase false certainty.
Question Everything
If a concept doesn't make sense to you, that's feedback for us to explain it better. We encourage challenging assumptions, including our own. The best learning happens when someone asks a question that makes everyone think differently.
Context Over Formulas
Yes, there's math involved in portfolio theory. But understanding when and why to use specific approaches matters more than memorizing equations. We focus on judgment development, not just technical skills.
Learning Programs Resume Autumn 2025
Our next cohort begins in September 2025. If you're interested in exploring investment theory with a group of curious professionals, reach out. We'll send details about the curriculum structure and what to expect from the sessions.
